About Jim

I went to high school at Norfolk Public High School in Norfolk, Nebraska. I graduated in 1983, and attended Georgia Southern College and the University of Central Florida (UCF).I originally majored in music (trumpet performance), but changed majors to psychology.

Subsequently, I received a bachelor's degree in psychology (1987), master's in industrial/organizational psychology (1989), and doctorate in human factors psychology (1993) at UCF. While at UCF, I worked for four years at the Army Research Institute (ARI) - STRICOM as a Consortium Research Fellow.

In 1992 I worked at Honeywell Systems and Research Center as a human factors intern.  I then returned to UCF, where I completed my Ph.D. while working as an instructor at Valencia Community College

After getting my Ph.D. in 1993, I immediately went to work as an assistant professor at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. I took a leave of absence from UAH in 1996 to teach classes at the University of Houston and to be Assistant Director of the Virtual Environment Technology Laboratory.  After returning to UAH in 1997, I earned tenure in 1999 and was promoted to associate professor.

I left UAH in 2001 to work as an associate professor in the psychology department at Old Dominion University.  I earned tenure at ODU in 2005.  I am currently the Ph.D. Programs Director, in charge of ODU’s Ph.D. programs in applied experimental psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, and human factors psychology.
