Research:  REACTS Lab

Why “REACTS”?

The acronym stands for “Research Environment for Alarms and Complex Task Simulations.”  Since my first academic job at UAH in 1993, I have managed a research laboratory where I work with students to investigate human reactions in simulated tasks and environments.

Past and Current Students

I’m proud to say that several of my students have earned baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral degrees and have moved on to bigger things.  Doctoral recipients include:

Carlotta Boone, Ph.D.:  Currently working in California as a subcontractor to Boeing.

Ernesto Bustamante, Ph.D.:  Currently Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Idaho, Moscow, ID.

Julie Stark, Ph.D.:  Currently employed with SYS Technologies, Norfolk, VA.

Mariea Washington, Ph.D.:  Currently employed with NASA-Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, AL.

Christopher Grounds, Ph.D.:  Currently employed with Raytheon, Inc., Huntsville, AL.

Past and Current Projects

Some of the more notable research projects are described on the “Research: Alarms”, “Research: VR”, and “Project List” pages of this site.

Lab Hardware and Software

At Old Dominion University, my students and I have access to a variety of equipment, including a medium fidelity driving simulator (GE I-SIM), and fully instrumented human-computer interface laboratory, a large number of standalone task simulations, virtual environment equipment including a four-wall CAVE, and several computer workstations for presenting simulated tasks.

Some of the software we have used recently includes the following packages:

Runtime Revolution                                  MAT
PRAAT Sound Editing Software                ANAM
Visual Basic                                              MS Office
Dreamweaver                                            Adobe Acrobat
MS Flight Simulator                                  SPSS
Dismounted Infantry Virtual After Action Review System (DIVAARS)
