Research: VR |
Using Virtual Reality for TrainingWhile working for the Army Research Institute in graduate school, I became involved with research concerning the use of virtual reality for training. After graduation, I continued that work by exploring the use of VR to train firefighters to navigate unfamiliar buildings. During 1996, my job at the University of Houston’s Virtual Environment Technology Laboratory concerned directing behavioral research that involved the use of VR for training surgical skills, peacekeeping operations, teamed navigation training, cultural recognition training, and a variety of other applications. Currently, I am working at Old Dominion University conducting more VR training research. At ODU, I’ve done work with colleagues to investigate the use of VR for military after action review, and for training medical procedures. Some of our publications in this area include: Bliss, J.P., Hanner, H., & Scerbo, M.W. (2005). Determining the efficacy of an immersive trainer for arthroscopy skills.
