VOLUNTEERISM

Subject:  Principles of Business and Marketing
Time required:  2 days
Related SOLs:  11.4, 11.9, 12.4

Set:  Most of the students in this class are under 16.  However, they can still make connections in the work world.  Tell how volunteering was beneficial to me as a young person.  Ask for students to share their experiences as a volunteer.

Rationale:  Students need to know why volunteering is important.  They can gain experience to include on their first resume and on college applications.  It also shows future employers they are willing to work.  Also related this effort to one of the purposes of DECA...to become conscious of their civic responsibilities.

Objectives:  T.L.W. identify volunteer resources available in our community.

Input:  Give addresses concerning where studnets can find information on volunteerism.

VA Office of Volunteerism - http://www.dss.state.va.us/program/volunteer
Action without Borders - http://www.idealist.org/IS/vol_search.html
Guided Practice:  Using the computer lab, with partner, study the information included in the addresses above.  Create a list of examples of how one can volunteer in the community.

Independent Practice:  Partners will choose one of the examples suggested during the brainstorming above.  Contact a related resource or organization and ask for brochures, info via the Web, letter, toll free number, etc., concerning this volunteering activity.

Assessment:  Partners will share with the class the information they have gained concerning volunteering based on their research.

Closure:  Encourage students to actively get involved in their volunteer activity.
