Starting a Job Smoothly

Objectives:  Define Net Pay, Gross Pay, Fringe Benefits, Deductions, etc.  Know company rules and regulations

Time: 1.5 blocks

Competencies:  SOLs: 20,7       E 11.3, 12.3    SS 12.15, 12.17

VA Aspects of Industry:    Finance

Work Place Readiness: Computer Literacy, Work Ethic, Work Attendance

Equipment/Materials:  Scavenger hunt, Internet access, KYTS

Activities:

  • Discuss/Brainstorm: What things do you need to know about your job?  Rules,             Policies, paycheck, etc.
  • Your Paycheck – Internet Scavenger Hunt using the IRS web site
  • Review the answers
  • Assign “Know Your Training Station” – Discuss each area (attendance/punctuality, management policies, in relation to workplace ethics)
  • What is FICA?  What is its purpose?  Extra Credit to the first student to come in after class to tell me.  (Federal Insurance Contributions Act)
  • Have the student share with the class next class period
  • Review Scavenger Hunt terms (using OH)
