WORKPLACE READINESS SKILLS

Objectives:  Students will understand how government regulates businesses to ensure fair business practices and safety for consumers. 

Competencies:  SOLs:  Government, History, English, Computer Technology 

VA Aspects of Industry: Labor Issues; Health, Safety, and Environmental Issues 

Work Place Readiness:  Adhering to policies/procedures, rules/regulations, extended work hours, maintaining safety on the job, accepting changes in the work environment. 

Equipment/Materials:  Internet access 

Activity: 

    1.  Students are given a federal regulatory agency web site to research. 

               www.osha.gov
               www.eeoc.gov
               www.fda.gov
               www.cpsc.gov
               www.epa.gov

 

    2.  They are to write a 1-2 page unbound report on their findings, which should 
          include the following: 

                a.  The meaning of the agency's acronym. 

                b.  The purpose of the agency. 

                c.  When the agency was established. 

                d.  The agency's responsibilities. 

                e.  A current issue facing that agency. 

                f.  State and/or federal localities. 
 

    3.  Have students share their findings with the class (oral optional). 
 
Evaluation:  Typed report; oral report (optional).
