Fashion Marketing using the Internet

Duty Area 17:  Identify current trends in fashion
Objective:  Using the Internet, students will explore and locate trends in fashion for the current season and create a trend report project to be used by a local business.
 
 

Content	Activities
Define what a trend is.	Have students write a def, off the top of their heads, share them with the class, and create one working definition.
Define the difference between a trend, a fad, and a classic.
Discuss current fashion magazines and other sources of locating trends.	Have students create (on the board) a list of all the fashion magazines they can think of.
Discuss the fashion life cycle and how trends are created.	Have students draw the product life cycle and discuss where trends would be placed.
Discuss how trends are spread
Define fashion leaders and followers.	Have students list examples of fashion leaders and followers.
Describe how the Internet could be used by fashion businesses to find the current trends or upcoming trends.	Create a list of local fashion businesses and write how each one could benefit from using the Internet to find trends.
Discuss the following magazines and locate their URL addresses:
WWD  DNR W  In style Vogue  Seventeen Glamour YM Cosmopolitan	www.wwd.com www.dnr.com www.w.com www.instyle.com www.vogue.com www.ym.com www.glamour.com Check these!! You may have students end up in strange places.
For each site, discuss components on each site.
Discuss how a business might use these sites to find trend reports.

Activity:
 Have the students create a trend report for a local fashion business that relates to the needs of that business.  Use the project sheet to give to students and grade projects submitted.
