A program of work is simply a roadmap to take a group of individuals to a destination or end. It is in place to guide you in accomplishing goals in an organized, efficient manner.  From this state
Churchland High School Officer Training Conference

program of work, we hope that you gain a clear picture of the high standards set forth for the coming year. Our state theme for the year is “Virginia DECA... Setting the Stage!”  It is our hope that you will join us in setting the stage for a fantastic year as our organization takes steps towards its efforts in 2007-2008.

AWARDS - With an overwhelming number of applicants in 2004-2007, Virginia DECA is again offering two POW awards to be presented at this year's State Leadership Conference. Both are meaningful and represent the true spirit of Virginia DECA. The awards pertain to civic consciousness and the 2007-2008 state charity. Both the American Cancer Society and the Virginia DECA Foundation have been named as recipients of this year's efforts. Make the stage in 2008 by participating in one or both of these awards!

STATE CHARITY - Read about this year's efforts as detailed on the State Charity page. Virginia DECA's goals are twofold. First, Virginia DECA plans to help support the American Cancer Society, and well-known organization that helps those in need, as well as provides research to help fight and stave off cancer. Eventually their goal is to find a cure. Through our statewide efforts, Virginia DECA can make a difference.

Virginia DECA plans to host one or more concerts, raising funds for the American Cancer Society. One of these concerts will be scheduled at a venue yet to be determined. We'll let you know once it's scheduled, and please do your best to be there! In addition, another concert will be scheduled at the dinner banquet on Saturday evening at the State Leadership Conference. This will prove to make the dinner banquet even more special than ever, with nearly 2000 students and advisors being treated to a very special dinner banquet. If your school happens to be one of the few that doesn't ordinarily attend, ask your advisor if your chapter can participate this year. It promises to be a very special occasion!

The second aspect of the 2007-2008 charitable effort is to help build the Virginia DECA Foundation into burgeoning organization that supports Virginia DECA and its members. Dbay will once again be conducted in December, auctioning off valuable items at "crazy" prices. But we do hope you will bid generously, knowing that all proceeds will go to fund the Virginia DECA Foundation. In addition, Virginia DECA will design and create a t-shirt for this year only, commemorating our success in years past, and all net proceeds will go the Foundation.

Just imagine... If every Marketing Education student contributed one dollar to either of these organizations (and you get to decide how you'd like your money allocated), that would provide our state charities with approximately $30,000! Now what might happen if each chapter had a fundraiser for one of these worthwhile organizations? The possibilities are staggering.

The top contributing chapters will be recognized and rewarded at SLC. Contributions will be tallied on a PER MEMBER basis to ensure fairness to both large and small chapters. To be eligible, please send your award application (below), as well as your check made payable to Virginia DECA, to be received no later than January 31, 2008. Selections will be made by taking the total dollar amount contributed divided by the number of Virginia DECA members in your chapter. For example, if you have 30 members, and you contribute $100, calculations will be made by dividing $100÷30=$3.33 per member.

COMMUNITY SERVICE/CIVIC CONSCIOUSNESS - Civic consciousness is part of the very foundation of Virginia DECA, and as you know, one of the four philosophies that DECA is predicated on. As a result, the chapter that shows the most effort in this area will be recognized and awarded at SLC. The award(s) will be granted based on the chapter that puts forth the most total community service hours per member (student and/or advisors). Start tracking your community service hours now! The tracking period begins August 1, 2007, and ends on January 31, 2008. To apply for this award, document the total number of community service hours performed by your paid chapter members. They must be members of Virginia DECA for their hours to count toward this award. To document your hours:
  • Create a list of each activity your chapter has performed throughout the tracking period. Activities must be DECA activities supported by your chapter. For example, if Suzie fed the homeless through her church, that would not be a DECA activity, and should not be counted. However, if Suzie fed the homeless as part of your chapter's efforts, then you should count the hours.
  • On the list, include a brief description of each activity, as well as how many members were involved in the activity.
  • At the end of the list, tally up your total hours. We will take your total eligible hours and divide it by the number of members you have, again, giving us an hours per member ratio. This will make the award available to small and large chapters alike.
  • All chapters advisors must sign the documentation.
  • Submit the documentation to Virginia DECA to be received no later than January 31, 2008.

MEMBERSHIP - As I hope you are already aware, Virginia DECA is number one!!! Numero uno. The big cheese. The grand poobah. 2007 continued to prove that Virginia is the biggest and the best by becoming the largest state association in the HISTORY of the organization (three years running)! AND we'd like to stay that way. Virginia DECA has implemented the "Superstar Chapter Program," acknowledging every chapter in the state with

  • a 10% increase OR
  • 100% membership OR
  • a 10 or more member increase for chapters over 100 members (see Superstar page for more detail)

All SLC attendees of qualifying SLC chapters will receive a DECA Superstar, or glow star, to wear at the opening session of the State Leadership Conference. See the membership pages for details.

The state officers have taken it upon themselves to do everything in their power to assist you and your chapter in continuing to grow. A few things that will be implemented are:

  • Send every chapter a recruitment video, highlighting the benefits of DECA
  • Maintain regular contact with chapter advisors and officers;
  • Communicate membership benefits through the DECA Distributor.

The goal this year is to surpass last year's membership count of 13,065 members. Can your chapter become even stronger than they were last year? Remember, one member more--albeit student, advisor, alumnus, or professional--counts! Can you muster up one more professional or alumni member than last year?
