Daylight Savings Time Update to LIONS Servers

During the next several weeks, we will be applying vendor patches to the LIONS servers in preparation for the new Daylight Savings Time changes that begin this year. This news page will be updated with the latest info regarding the updates.

As per the Sun DST FAQ 102775:

Over the last two years, many countries around the world have been incrementally implementing legislation to change their daylight savings time (DST) dates and their time zone definitions.

As these changes come into force, failure to modify the system time automatically may cause inaccurate system date and time which could lead to unpredictable consequences depending upon system usage.

These changes include:

  1. Australia delaying the end of DST by one week for 2006 only to support the Commonwealth games. Instead of ending at 3am on March 25, 2006 it will end at 3am April 2, 2006.
  2. U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005 implements change for the US. Starting in March 2007, DST in the United States will begin on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday in November.
  3. Canadian Provinces Quebec(QC), Ontario(ON), Nova Scotia(NS), Nunavut(NU), Saskatchewan(SK), Manitoba(MB), New Brunswick(NB) and Prince Edward Island(PE) will follow US DST changes which will come into force in March 2007. Note: This does not include the provinces Alberta(AB), British Columbia(BC), Newfoundland and Labrador(NL), Northwest Territories (NT) and Yukon(YK).
  4. The remaining Canadian provinces Alberta(AB), British Columbia(BC), Newfoundland and Labrador(NL), Northwest Territories (NT) and Yukon(YK) will also follow US DST changes which will come into force in March 2007.
  5. Western Australia has introduced a three year trial of DST which has already started on Dec 3rd 2006 and ends on last Sunday in March.
  6. The Bahamas will also follow US DST changes which will come into force in March 2007.

In preparation for these and other changes, the LIONS machines are being patched in phases. Phase 1 will take place on Sunday, January 28, 2007, between 6am and noon, and will affect the following servers: 

 StBarts
 StJohn
 StKitts
 Palm
 Roatan
 StLucia
 Tobago
 StCroix
During Phase 1, the Sol-login, LIONS Web/FTP, as well as Live Video Streaming will be unavailable.

Phase 2 is being planned for Friday, February 2, 2007, and will affect the following servers: 

 Belize
 Helios
 Hydra
 Norfolk
 Pegasus
 Wake
 Borabora
During Phase 2, jobs running on the LIONS SMP machines will unfortunately be terminated, NFS disk space to the OCCS/Engineering clusters, software licensing and Sunray services will be unavailable.
