Requesting a LIONS Account
Activation of your LIONS accounts is now processed via MIDAS (Monarch IDentification and Authorization System). Please read the following important information, then click the link at the bottom of the page to be redirected to the MIDAS website.
A LIONS account is needed to access the "General Purpose" UNIX resources or to access the "High Performance" UNIX resources supported by OCCS. Although any current faculty, staff or student is eligible for a LIONS account, only a small percentage actually need one. Please make sure that YOU need this kind of account before you have one set up.
When you activate your LIONS account from MIDAS, it may take upwards of ten to thirty minutes for your account to activate on the LIONS side. Please be patient during this process. If it exceeds thirty minutes, please wait an hour and then try using your MIDAS login and password to log into sol-login.lions.odu.edu - if it works, then your account was created - MIDAS will catch up eventually. If you still cannot log in at this point, please send an email to 'unixhelp@odu.edu' explaining the situation.
Please note that even though you can set up your LIONS account thru MIDAS, it can not and does not give access to certain resources, such as departmental software, nor does it assume any quota beyond the system defaults. To get this access once you have set up your LIONS account, please send an email to unixhelp@odu.edu to request such access.
Already have a MIDAS account?
Log in to MIDAS to access your "My Services" page. Review the list of services (accounts) that you currently have active and those for which you are eligible. Select the services that you want to activate and submit your request. Your selected services will be activated and your user name will display below the service name. Your password for all activated services will match your MIDAS password.
Don't have a MIDAS account?
From the MIDAS home page, activate your MIDAS account and create your security profile (this will allow you to set a new password if you forget yours). You will be immediately forwarded to our "My Services" page. Review the list of services (accounts) that you currently have active and those for which you are eligible. Select the services that you want to activate and submit your request. Your selected services will be activated and your user name for each will display below the service name. Your password for all activated services will match your MIDAS password.
Important Information for Original LIONS Users
Please note that activating your LIONS account from MIDAS will not automatically copy your original LIONS home directory to the new LIONS system. If you wish to perform the copy yourself, instructions have been placed on this page:
http://www.lions.odu.edu/LIONS2_FAQ.html#copyfiles
If you need assistance in copying your data over, please send an email to 'unixhelp@odu.edu'.
Acceptable Usage Statement
This message summarizes the university's policies relative to the use of university computing resources. Please read it carefully; by establishing your accounts, you are agreeing to abide by these policies.
Computers and networks provide access to resources on and off campus, as well as the ability to communicate with other users worldwide. Such open access is a privilege, and requires that users act responsibly. Users must respect the rights of other users, the integrity of systems and related physical resources, and observe all relevant laws, regulations, and contractual obligations. All existing laws (federal and state) and university regulations and policies apply, including not only those laws and regulations that are specific to computers and networks, but also those that may apply generally to personal conduct.
System administrators reserve the right to access user files as required to protect the integrity of computing systems. Complaints alleging misuse of resources will be directed to those responsible for taking appropriate disciplinary action. Misuse of computing, networking, or information resources may result in the loss of computing privileges; if warranted, misuse can result in more severe consequences.
